Somewhere
to begin
Projects begin long before we call them projects. There is a place in mind, or a feeling that something needs to happen, and there’s a lot that hasn’t found its shape yet.
That is a part of the work I know well and love. I’m a designer, and I help ideas find their shape. Tell me what you’re thinking about
A note on the work
I’ve spent about twenty years around projects, first in Moscow and later in New York with Gensler and Kiewit. What keeps my attention is how an idea changes as you draw it, question it, and work out how someone will actually use it.
Literator
A very small office in Moscow, where the table is warm and people in neighbouring rooms see each other through a little fog.
Spend a moment here

High Pines
A weekend house in the Urals. The living spaces step down a wooded slope, following a long retaining wall.
Follow the ground

Saint Johns Terminal
Work at Gensler on the lower levels of the former rail terminal, from early thinking through construction documents.

I keep a notebook
Some questions follow you out of a project. I write about the creative process and about what happens when the tools change, and occasionally build a tool to see what it might let us do. Browse the notebook.
Your project
Bring the thing
that’s stuck in your head
We can sit down with whatever you have and work out what matters, what comes first, and where the project might go from there. Begin with a conversation.
