Fundamental Advantage of AI in Design
Designers and architects work in a language that isn’t made of words, it’s made of form, light, proportion, material, atmosphere. It’s incredibly rich, it’s universal and also quite weak and unpredictable as a communication tool. It’s hard to email a spatial feeling, the language of space is felt, not spoken, and that’s both its power and its problem.
Designers always had this gap between what you sense and what you say. The hand helps with the first part - when we sketch, fast, dozens of variations, loose, searching, we’re letting the body express what consciousness hasn’t caught up with yet. That part of the process should stay physical, bodily, because real search and discovery happen in the movement, not in the description.
But then we need to call it out. Why does this one feel right and that one doesn’t? What’s the idea underneath this? Thought is not expressed but completed in the word, the naming isn’t a summary of the idea, it IS the idea reaching its final form. Before you said “the brick wanted to be an arch” you only half-knew it. The words give spatial intuition edges, structure, something you can hold your further work against.
And here we go, it’s the layer of language where AI genuinely shines bouncing words, sharpening definitions, finding the right term for what you’re sensing. Our Taste and Opinion, which matter more than ever in the AI era, come into play here along with the professional intuition giving a hint which words match the feeling.
The fundamental advantage of AI in design is not visual, it’s verbal and it helps the designer finish thinking. Why do we need to finish thinking? I have a couple thoughts for later.
