Florence Fragment 01
Loggia dei Lanzi, pen on paper

The columns are too far apart for shelter. You wouldn’t stand there in rain. The spacing was solved for something else — for the eye moving across the piazza, catching a rhythm between solid and void.
I’ve sketched colonnades before and always drawn them too regular. This time I tried to draw the shadow first, then find the column inside the shadow.
The error is in the spandrel — I couldn’t decide whether it was reading as load or as ornament, and the line weight shows the indecision. That’s the drawing telling me something I hadn’t understood about the building.
